THE SECOND SEX AFTER 50 YEARS

In 1949 Simone de Beauvoir published what would become known as the “Bible” of feminism.  Fifty years later
it is still cited in feminist debates, and commentaries on the book and reassessments of Beauvoir’s thought have
appeared throughout the 1990s.
During January 19-23 of this year, a major international conference was held in
Paris to mark the 50th anniversary of the publication of The Second Sex.  Among the over eighty sponsors
worldwide was the Women’s Studies Program at Texas Tech.  As stated in the Web announcement of the
conference, participants gathered to:

CELEBRATE the anniversary of the most significant feminist work of the 20th century

HONOR the memory of Simone de Beauvoir

BRING TOGETHER their analyses and their experience of the reception and the influence of this
                                                    book, and

ASSESS the state of the feminist movement and of women’s studies.
