One of the original departments of Texas Technological College, the University Theatre
began as part of the Speech Department.  The duties of Ruth Pirtle, the only theater faculty member, included teaching speech therapy, public speaking, and producing pageants in the school gymnasium.
On May 4, 1928, The Youngest was the first official Tech play produced and performed at the college.
Now part of the Department of Theatre and Dance, the University Theatre annually conducts three seasons of plays---faculty-directed works in the University Theatre building, student-directed pieces in the Lab Theatre, and the Lubbock Summer Repertory season.  Angel Fire Mountain Theatre consists of selected works showcased by the department whereby students have the opportunity to gain experience with the university troupe in the mountains of New Mexico.
