BREAKING BOUNDARIES

Activist (ak-ti-vist) an especially active, vigorous advocate of a cause.

Even in times when a woman’s place was believed to be in the home, women were writing, organizing, and demonstrating in support of improvements in working conditions, the treatment of their fellow man, the health of the social and natural worlds, and for increased political rights for themselves.  These activists broke boundaries that had kept workers, African-Americans, and women in general in “their place.”  This display recognizes some of the women who have contributed so much of their lives to increasing opportunities and improving life for all Americans.

On April 20, 2001, the Women’s Studies Council will host the 17th Annual Conference on the Advancement of Women in Higher Education.   This year’s theme is “Breaking Boundaries –What Culture, Contexts, and Sports Tell Us.”
