INDIGENOUS ART from The Phillips Estate Collection
Exhibit Curated by Brenda L. Haes and Lynn Whitfield and Fabricated by Lyn Stoll
Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library-2004

Dr. Florence Louise Phillips served as Dean of Women at Texas Tech from 1957 until 1968, after which time, she chose to pursue her love of teaching full time in the Psychology Department.  In addition to her many psychology publications, Dr. Phillips wrote about working with college students and often served as a sponsor on student trips.  She remained with the university until her retirement in 1989.

Phillips’ interest in art led to her amassing a small and eclectic collection of works by many well known southwestern artists, including fiber artist Helenn Rumpel.  Many of the pieces in the Phillips’ collection are Native American, the bulk of which are pots by San Ildefonso artist Rose Gonzales.  The potter and Dr. Phillips shared a longtime friendship, and Gonzales visited Texas Tech to speak to Phillips' students about her work.

The pieces on display in this exhibit were given to the University Archives in memory of Dr. Phillips.  Other examples from her collection can be viewed in the Coronelli Rotunda Gallery cases.
