The history trunk program is sponsored by the Texas Tech University
Libraries. Through a Libraries Initiative Fund grant received for fiscal year 1998-1999,
the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library assembled materials for use by
educators in teaching about the ranching frontier in Texas. We believe that use of such
materials will foster a "hands on" appreciation of the history of Texas and the
West Texas region, and will also serve to inform teachers about the rich holdings and
opportunities for research at the Southwest Collection/Special Collections Library.
We have enclosed within each trunk a variety of
materials including maps, photographs, slide presentations, clothing, recipes, music,
transparencies, video presentations, worksheets, quizzes, games, and other items to
enhance the learning experience of students and teachers alike. Paralleling the learning
experience in the classroom, we have also provided a web page on the Internet where
students and instructors can use a "virtual classroom" to reinforce classroom
learning.
We hope that your experience in using the History Trunk will be informative and rewarding, and we look forward to working with you any way that we can. Tours of the Southwest Collection/SCL are available when arranged in advance, and we can also provide ideas for research projects. Thank you for using our history trunk, and please let us know if we might be of any assistance.
