Tape 1, Side 1: Background: started classes in the spring of 1935, Tech had a baseball team from 1926-1929 and then resumed 1954. The only team on campus was the dormitory softball league. Sammy Rosenthal also helped get a minor league team in Lubbock. The ballpark was out toward Clovis Highway. College softball league: The teams would play on a field north of West Hall. Arch worked for the Beech Nut Company at this time and passed out gum. Named his team the Beechies, but the company didn't like it for insurance purposes, so he changed it to the Bee Hives. Jack Horner: biggest guy in school who was the umpire at all games. Jim McKnight was his roommate whom Jack got in a fight with and quit umpiring. Eventually they convinced him to come back. And this was the year Arch was the president of the men's Dorm Association. Other people to talk to: Poke Robinson, Charles Gailey, IB Palmer.
