Doug Peacock is a lifelong wilderness advocate, defender of grizzly bears, author, and filmmaker. He is the cofounder of several conservation organizations including Round River Conservation Studies. He has appeared on many radio and television shows such as The Today Show, Good Morning America, and The American Sportsman. A film about Peacock, Peacock’s War, premiered on PBS Nature in 1988. In 2007, Peacock was named a Guggenheim Fellow and in 2011, a Lannan Fellow. Peacock, the model for Edward Abbey’s fictional character, George Washington Hayduke, is a former Green Beret medic and a disabled veteran of the Vietnam War. Author of numerous magazine articles, his books include Grizzly Years, Walking It Off, Baja!, The Essential Grizzly (co-authored with his wife Andrea), and In the Shadow of the Sabertooth.

About the collection:
Doug Peacock Papers, 1950-2000 (24 boxes) was one of the first acquisitions for the Sowell Collection. It contains research materials, personal and business correspondence, reviews, engagement calendars, pocket size journals, Edward Abbey material, and manuscript and galleys and field notes on Doug Peacock's studies on grizzly bears. The collection has extensive material on Grizzly Years and Walking it Off, as well as material on the documentary film, Peacock's War.
